Detroit bakery to host bike ride, djs, more
DETROIT. May 26, 2021 – This June 5th, Avalon will be celebrating its 24th birthday with a celebration including a bike ride to its three Detroit locations. The bakery has been making its mark on the Detroit community since before the turn of the century.
“In 1997, we could have never imagined that we would be celebrating our 24th birthday, riding bikes with over 150 people, between three Avalon locations. Especially after the last fourteen months, we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate our amazing community.”
As part of the birthday celebration, Avalon is partnering with MoGo, metro Detroit’s non-profit bike share organization, to host the first ever Avalon-a-thon, a 10-mile bike ride that will include stops at three Avalon locations in Detroit. Anyone participating will have the option to use a MoGo bike.
“Avalon has meant a lot to Detroit since they opened their doors in 1997,” said Adriel Thornton, executive director of MoGo. “They have always been a community asset, and have supported MoGo from the beginning. We’re really excited to be partnering with them for this event!”
Registration for the event includes treats at each of the four stops along the bike route, $10-worth of Avalon ‘bakery bucks’, and an Avalon Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie t-shirt. Participants are welcome to use their own bikes, or pay a small additional fee to have a MoGo waiting for them when they arrive. In addition to the three Avalon stops, the route will also feature a “hydration station,” provided by MoGo title sponsor Health Alliance Plan (HAP).
As Avalon nears the quarter-century mark, they’re proud to have remained true to their mission: Eat Well. Do Good.
About Avalon: In 1997, Avalon International Breads pulled its first loaves of bread out of the oven in the Cass Corridor, Detroit. A triple-bottom-line business, committed to Earth. Community. Employees, Avalon has become a Detroit institution known for great food, great service, great values and the best chocolate chip cookie in Michigan (according to YELP) !

Ashe Supply Co was created by friends AJ and Mike in an apartment in Southwest Detroit, with the goal to create a brand around coffee that was meant for everyone. Part of that involved creating a motto that is completely open for interpretation: “Drink Coffee Live Wild”. For the ASHE team, it’s about drinking coffee, finding themselves in nature, long van trips, or ripping motorcycles. “For everyone else, they wanted to be a catalyst for those to enjoy a better cup of coffee in their coffee shop, at home, or however they might drink coffee and live wild.” MoGo riders can show their MoGo card, key fob, Transit app, or receipt to receive 10% off at Ashe Supply Co!

Events May 20-23 highlight MoGo’s community impact, Rider Perks
In May, MoGo, metro Detroit’s nonprofit bike share system, celebrates four years of operation. Since launching in 2017, MoGo has provided nearly half a million rides across its service area, which includes greater Downtown Detroit, Northwest Detroit, Ferndale, Oak Park, Huntington Woods, Berkley, and Royal Oak.
“MoGo takes pride in providing reliable and equitable transportation to our riders,” said Adriel Thornton, executive director of MoGo. “We’re excited to be celebrating this milestone by offering MoGo riders a free ride day, a significant discount on the Annual Pass, and so much more over our birthday weekend.”
MoGo’s Four Days for Four Years celebration kicks off with a Free Ride Day on Thursday, May 20. Presented by Henry Ford Health System and Health Alliance Plan (HAP), MoGo will offer their two-hour Prepaid pass for free, available at station kiosks and through the Transit app. This promotion will recur every third Thursday of the month through the Fall. MoGo will also offer a “4 Years, 4 Days, 40% Off” sale on annual passes from Thursday, May 20 through Sunday, May 23.
May 21 is National Bike to Work Day, and MoGo encourages all riders to safely bike to work — and to enjoy some Rider Perks from participating vendors, with discounts on food, bike equipment and more. And on Saturday, May 22, Rider Perks partner Motor City Brewing Works will be offering 15% off and a special MoGo pizza at their Midtown location.
Since it began operations in May 2017, MoGo has grown its membership sales by 88%, while its Access Pass program, which is designed to make MoGo accessible to lower-income riders, has seen membership rise by 150%. At MoGo’s 75 docking stations, riders can access one of 620 bikes, including electric pedal-assisted Boost Bikes. MoGo also offers Adaptive MoGo, a program that includes bikes designed for riders of different abilities and different needs, such as recumbent tricycles, hand operated tricycles and other bike types. Adaptive MoGo will re-launch later this month as well.
MoGo’s operating partner, SHIFT Transit, has helped maintain and operate the fleet of bicycles since 2017. SHIFT Transit CEO Eddie Inlow said, “Our partnership with MoGo shows just how much we can accomplish to make micromobility accessible for many. Just last year, we were thrilled to be part of the expansion that boosted MoGo’s footprint by almost 70 per cent. We’re proud to be a partner and look forward to many more years of providing transit service to southeast Michigan.”

Adriel Thornton named Executive Director of MoGo
MoGo team set to grow with additional positions
DETROIT. May 5, 2021 —Adriel Thornton has been named the new executive director at MoGo, metro Detroit’s nonprofit bike share system. Thornton has been the director of marketing and community outreach at MoGo since its launch in 2017 and brings a wealth of leadership and community engagement experience to the executive position. MoGo is also adding two part-time positions to support community outreach and programming as part of a grant funded by the Better Bike Share Partnership.
“I’m thrilled to be stepping into this leadership role and am excited about the future of MoGo,” said Thornton. “Having been a part of MoGo’s story from the beginning, I remain confident that we will continue to bring more opportunities for mobility and equity in Detroit and the region.”
MoGo is a nonprofit affiliate of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, which has provided a variety of support to launch and expand bike share since 2015. “Adriel brings a wealth of skill and talent to his new role at MoGo, and he is in a great position to build on the opportunities associated with leading a growing bike share system,” said Eric B. Larson, CEO of the Downtown Detroit Partnership. “Transportation and mobility are key issues for Detroiters and MoGo will continue to play an important role in the city’s future. MoGo has successfully expanded, and now it’s time for the organization to evolve.”
Thornton joined MoGo Detroit in January 2017, helping launch the nonprofit in May of that year. Previous to that, he served as the outreach and operations manager at Allied Media Projects, and manager of corporate marketing for American Entertainment Technology. He is also the founder of Fresh Media Group. Additionally, Thornton has been a long-time community activist and event producer. He earned his bachelor’s degree in public relations from Wayne State University.
MoGo Board Chair Ned Staebler said, “Adriel is a tremendous asset to the MoGo team. His experience in marketing and community outreach, his commitment to transportation equity and his love of biking: they all work together to make Adriel the obvious choice to head up MoGo.”
Thornton begins as executive director on May 5, 2021. He replaces Lisa Nuszkowski, MoGo’s founder and outgoing executive director, who is now the president of M-1 Rail.
In addition to the promotion of Thornton, Jeremy Rosenberg, MoGo’s current marketing assistant, will step up as the organization’s marketing and digital media manager. Two new positions also will be added to the MoGo team in coming weeks through the Better Bike Share Partnership’s Living Lab program, an initiative to support, showcase and learn lessons from four cities including Detroit. Designed to reduce barriers to micromobility in lower-income communities, the positions of outreach and engagement manager and program manager focus on improving connections between bike share and bus service with partners Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT), Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) and Wayne State University.
